#2 - The Woolpack Hotel

For $8 a pop, we were expecting a bowl full of hand peeled golden goodness, individually salted to perfection. Instead, we got a dish that was so greasy it should have come with its own flock of seagulls.

The bowl was accompanied by two sidekicks - one mayo and the other, a suspicious looking orange dip. After a couple of cheeky dunks we avoided both, secretly wishing they’d stuck to some good ol’ tommy sauce.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we couldn’t finish our fries. We don’t know if it was the overly generous portion or our lack of commitment.

The only good thing about this chip expedition was the fact that it was Trivia Night at the Woolpack. During our chip scrutiny session, we moonlighted as brainiacs under the team name: Sml Fry.

The Woolpack left a fried film on the roof of our mouths, but by participating in Trivia we increased our brand awareness by 40%. Not bad for Thursday night.

In a nutshell…

Outlay: $8 #soexpensive
Cut: Steak. Flat and Thick
Soft or Crunchy: Kind of crunchy
Salt: Nowhere near enough
Rating: 2

French fries. I love them. Some people are chocolate and sweets people. I love french fries. That and caviar.

These chips would be nothing without their saucy sidekick.

I don’t care if you call it garlic sauce, aioli, mayo or white muck on the side, the condiment that accompanies this bowl of fries will disappear faster than you can say ‘extra salt please’. Use it sparingly or ask for extra.

The chips arrived luke warm, but that may have been because the trip from the kitchen to our outdoor table was a bit of a hike. On the up side, they managed to avoid the torrential rain and there wasn’t a soggy fry in sight.

Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the chef outdid himself and cooked these starchy suckers to perfection - only then he got distracted and forgot to add salt. So we added our own. After a generous sprinkling of your generic table salt half the bowl was gone.

Perfect for a snack or a second dinner, the bowl was big enough to share or to keep to yourself.

In a nutshell….

Outlay: $6
Cut: Steak. Flat and Thick
Soft or Crunchy: Crunchy
Salt: Absent
Rating: 3

These days, the humble french fry is being forgotten.

Everyone loves them, but they've been laying low as a common side dish for too long. It's time they take centre stage!
